Trail Conditions

Last updated: July 3, 2009

Summer is here along with warm temperatures. Trail conditions are changing rapidly as the snow melts. The general snow level is around 5500', varying widely with slope and aspect.  Wildflowers are blooming and low elevation trails are melted out, but access to most passes and higher elevation trails still requires some snow travel and the necessary skills and equipment.
There have already been a few wildfires in the park this year, and the fire season is expected to be a busy one. With the upcoming holiday weekend, the risk for out-of-control campfires is heightened. Please be responsible when having a campfire: if you choose to have one, keep it small and make sure the fire pit and ash are cool to the touch before leaving camp.
Trail crews are clearing trails, but there is still blowdown in some places, and the potential for encountering trail damage. E-mail us a trail report if you can provide an update.

CLOSURES AND NOTICES:
The Panther Creek Trail is closed until further notice due to wildfire activity.   The trail closure extends from the Panther Creek trailhead on SR 20 to Fourth of July Pass.  Fourth of July trail and camp are open.

West Bank Trail/Big Beaver Trail is not passable to stock beyond Cougar Creek (south of Pierce Creek, about 5 miles from Ross Dam TH) due to a damaged bridge. Trail is only passable for hikers.

If you are heading out into the backcountry, check the weather forecast and be prepared for a variety of conditions. Carry extra food and clothing, and leave an itinerary with family or friends. You can also check the road conditions report

Whenever and wherever you travel in the wilderness, please be safe, and “touch the wilderness gently.” Know and practice Leave No Trace camping and hiking.
