UPDATE:
  • All interior park roads closed for the season at 8 a.m. Monday, November 3, in preparation for winter.
  • The only park road that remains open to wheeled-vehicle use year-round is the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. Snow tires and/or chains may be required. The road is open 24 hours per day (winter storms may close the road temporarily).  
  • At Mammoth, the Yellowstone General Store, clinic, campground are open all year. The Albright Visitor Center is open daily except Veterans Day (November 11) and Thanksgiving Day (November 27).
  • All communities near and on the way to Yellowstone are open year-round. Information about cities or towns within 200 hundred miles of the park, is available at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/cities.htm.
  • Winter weather conditions can temporarily close some park roads at any time. Visitors should be prepared for a wide range temperatures and weather. Recorded information on road conditions is available 24 hours a day by calling 307-344-2117. For information on trails and camping call 307-344-2160 during business hours.
  • Winter Opening Opening Dates are Snow Permitting and all dates are subject to change!! See our Winter Use Planning page for current information.

Did You Know?
Some groups of Shoshone Indians, who adapted to a mountain existence, chose not to acquire the horse. These included the Sheep Eaters, or Tukudika, who used dogs to transport food, hides, and other provisions. The Sheep Eaters lived in many locations in Yellowstone.
