2009 Public Astronomy Programs

The dark skies of White Sands National Monument are great for stargazing. For an out-of-this-world experience, join a park ranger for one of the following public astronomy programs.



The Ninth Annual White Sands Star Party

Saturday, September 12, 7:30 p.m.

Join amateur astronomers for telescope viewing and constellation talks. For more information, see the following web site Alamogordo Astronomy Club.

Did You Know?
The wind moves small sand grains by bouncing them along the surface in a process called "saltation." Saltating sand grains create a beautiful pattern of ripples on the dune surface. Larger sand grains are struck by saltating grains and slowly roll forward, a process known as "surface creep."
