Park Opens Pemberton's HQ to VisitorsVicksburg National Military Park will open Confederate General John C. Pemberton’s Headquarters (Willis-Cowan House) on Mondays, starting May 26, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
The house will be open to the visitors every Monday for the months of June and July. Pemberton’s Headquarters is located at 1018 Crawford Street, Vicksburg, MS.

2008 Memorial Day Events
Vicksburg National Military Park will honor the men and women who died in service to our nation this Memorial Day weekend.
On Friday, May 23, staff and volunteers will decorate the 18,000 graves at the Vicksburg National Cemetery with United States flags. The flags will stay in place through Monday, May 26, Memorial Day. Anyone interested in volunteering and assisting with decorating the veterans’ graves can meet at the USS Cairo parking lot at 7:30 AM on Friday.

Despite the stormy day on Friday, Volunteers went ahead with the schedule workday Saturday, April 5 at the Park. About 30 people, including teens, worked to paint 15 to 20 carriages.

Park to present draft alternatives for landscape management plan
Vicksburg, Mississippi – Vicksburg National Military Park, along with contractors, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., John Milner Associates, Inc., and MacTec Engineering and Consulting, Inc., will hold its second open house to present the draft alternatives identified for the Cultural Landscape Report/Environmental Assessment project currently underway. The public is invited to provide their input on these draft alternatives, as well as the Purpose, Objectives, and Issues leading to their development.

Supervisory Facility Operations Specialist
Garry L. Lee has been promoted to the Supervisory Facility Operations Specialist position at the Vicksburg National Military Park. Garry will assume his new duties as the Assistant Chief of Maintenance effective March 31, 2008. Garry is a native of Vicksburg, graduate from Warren Central High School and has been an employee of the Vicksburg National Military Park for 18 years.

The illegal relic hunting on the battlefield was reported on May 11. Stories appeared in Vicksburg, on Jackson TV and elsewhere via The Associated Press. But the culprits were not dissuaded. “I saw them about 3 a.m. (May 13), but I lost them in the woods,” Martin said.

2007 Memorial Day
The park will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Minnesota Monument, Thursday, May 24, 2007. Also, park staff and volunteers will decorate over 18,000 graves with American flags on May 25, 2007 in the Vicksburg National Cemetery to honor the soldiers and prepare for the Memorial Day events that will occur beginning May 24-28, 2007.

Vets, dependents to get new state cemetery
The Vicksburg National Military Park has a federal military cemetery with veterans from the Civil War and all wars until Vietnam. Only a few grave spaces remain - and they are reserved. Proposal for Federal cemetery are being taken by by Veterans Affairs Board until Dec. 15.
