Vicksburg National Military Park
Superintendent's Message
WELCOME!

Vicksburg National Military Park preserves sites associated with one of the most complex and protracted engagements of the Civil War involving joint operations between the Army and Navy, overland and over-water troop movement, and diversion, siege, and defense tactics. The outcome at Vicksburg satisfied the strategic objective to control the Mississippi River. In addition, simultaneous Union victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg in July 1863, marked the decisive turning point in the Civil War.

Vicksburg National Military Park is one of the first five national military parks and was established through the steadfast efforts of Union and Confederate veterans who experienced war firsthand over its grounds. It preserves a memorial owed to faithful soldiers and sailors and perpetuates their history for the benefit of present and future generations. Park employees and partners are dedicated to this mission and will provide you with information and facilities to make your visit memorable.

The park recently restored a section of the historic battlefield on the South Loop by removing trees that prevented understanding of the engagement at the Railroad Redoubt. On-going work on historic bridges throughout the park includes controlling erosion and sealing surface cracks. The wall that enclosed Vicksburg National Cemetery is being cleaned and re-pointed, and the old administrative building is being stabilized. In addition, there are on-going activities, an orientation film, and bookstore to enhance your visit.

Please enjoy this piece of history!
