General William T. Sherman
As one of General Grant's most trusted officers, General William T. Sherman was commander of the XV Army Corps, and instrumental in preventing the troops under Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston from staging an assault on the Union army from the east during the siege. Effectively manning what was known as the 'Exterior Line,' Sherman was able to counteract any action undertaken by these Southern forces.  His headquarters site was located within easy communication distance of Grant's own headquarters.
