The Michigan State Memorial is located on Union Avenue at tour stop #1, Battery DeGolyer, milepost 1.2 of the park tour road. The memorial is made of White Bethel Granite and stands thirty-seven feet in height. It cost $10,000 and was dedicated on November 10, 1916. The sculptor was Herbert Adams. The design features a woman that signifies the Spirit of Michigan.

That the Union siege lines and Confederate defensive lines were marked during the first decade of the 20th century by many of the veterans who had fought at Vicksburg, thus making Vicksburg National Military Park one of the most accurately marked military parks in the world.
