Challenge Cost Share

Challenge Cost Share is a program offering federal funding, to be matched 50/50, for preservation and interpretation/education projects along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

Applying for project funding

Don't be frightened by the forms! Instructions are provided, and help is available from staff at the National Trail System-Intermountain office in Santa Fe.

The submission deadline is March 2, 2009, for FY09 (October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009). Contact our office to discuss your project prior to submitting your completed proposal.

President Andrew Jackson began to aggressively implement a broad policy of Indian removal in the 1830s. This policy, combined with the discovery of gold on Cherokee land in northern Georgia in 1829, led to their removal to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) on the Trail of Tears.
