Welcome to
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore!

Aerial view of Sleeping Bear Dunes Welcome to the most beautiful nature-scape in Michigan's Lower Peninsula - the breath-taking Sleeping Bear Dunes. Towering 460 feet above the blue waters of Lake Michigan, they are the prime feature of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the source of the famous "Legend of the Sleeping Bear".

Although most visitors come for the allure of the dunes, they quickly discover that there is much more to Michigan's second National Lakeshore. An excellent case-in-point is the seven mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive which combines nature, history and world-class views - several distinctly different views throughout the course of the drive await the photo-buff's lens. Make sure you have an ample supply of film, which is available from many local stores and the DuneCenter bookstore facility located adjacent to the Dune Climb. In addition to the views, there are also hiking trails where visitors can have a close-up experience with the wonders of dunes vegetation. Ranger-guided nature hikes along the Cottonwood Trail are a regular feature of the summer season.

A pastoral picnic area, appropriately named Picnic Mountain, invitingly suggests red-checked tablecloths, wicker baskets and cool refreshments; hotdogs: optional. Picnic tables and grills are readily available; comfort facilities are located onsite. Handicap accessible.

While the Scenic Drive begs to be bicycled, this activity should be left only to the most skilled, able riders. Steep hills, sharp curves and heavy vehicular traffic all add up to a challenging, often dangerous ride. Let caution be your guide!

Other features of Sleeping Bear include the Dune Climb (yahoo!), the Maritime Museum, The Cannery (historic boat museum), the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center, ranger-led walks and talks, Campfire Programs, the Junior Ranger Program, canoeing, boating, hiking the park's 13 trail systems, fishing, hunting and cross-country skiing. Recreational and educational opportunities abound throughout the Lakeshore! School groups are welcome throughout the year as are tour groups, etc. Personalized ranger services are available upon advance request.
