Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Tweddle/Treat Cultural Landscape

The Tweddle/Treat Cultural Landscape is comprised of several farms and their associated structures, orchards and fields. This is one of the primary landscapes in the park. In fact, the Treat Farm has nearly taken on a life of its own in recent years. While it has never been formally designated as a hiking trail, it is one of the most frequently visited sites in the park.

Visitors are drawn to this intriguing farmstead for several reasons. The little two-track road leading up the slight incline from Norconk Road holds an allure of its own... it seems to beckon passers-by. It piques the curiosity by conjuring visions of what might be at its terminus. It is also one of the most beautiful roads for spring wildflowers in all of Michigan!

When you reach the site, a fantastic array of buildings greets you: the old farmhouse, the barns, a truly unique root cellar and assorted old sheds. You can practically hear the farmer directing the team as they hay the fields. Evidence of crop placement and the family's private garden plot are readily apparent if you're looking for the right clues!

If your energy is still high and your sense of adventure not quite quenched, hike to the top of Old Baldy for a panoramic vista. It goes without saying that all of this should only be undertaken with camera equipment & supplies in tow. If you are in need of extra film or batteries, there are stores in the towns bordering the park as well as our own DuneCenter facility at the Dune Climb area where these supplies may be purchased.

Other elements to this important cultural landscape include the old Tweddle School on the corner of Norconk and M-22 and the Crouch Farm, kitty-corner to the Treat two-track. The Crouch Farm is currently used for housing NPS seasonal employees as well as our annual Artists-In-Residence. While admiring this picturesque farmstead you can clearly see why this site would be so inspirational for a working artist.

While you are visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, keep in mind that there is much more to see in addition to the dunes and beaches: the varied cultural landscapes throughout the park offer unique glimpses into the past. Let your mind (and feet!) wander as you share the beauty of this outstanding park with your family and friends.
