Planning resources (maps and guidebooks): The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) publishes three topographic maps ($6 each) which cover Shenandoah National Park. If you only want to buy one, consider map # 11 (South District) if you prefer solitude, or either #9 or #10 if you prefer busier trails, some of which include waterfalls over 70'. If you plan to hike more than 100 miles total, or plan to hike the Appalachian Trail including side trails, plan on buying more than one map. The PATC guidebook ($10) is very helpful for planning specific mileages and finding boundary trailheads, as well as providing general information on every trail in the park.
