Approximately 30 species of ferns have been identified at Saint-Gaudens NHS. Typically, they are found in shady areas with moist soils. Ferns are an ancient line of plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds and therefore do not produce flowers. At one time the Eastern United States was covered with forests of tree-sized ferns.
