The National Park Service works with federal agencies, state and local governments, organizations, tribes, and private individuals as partners to administer the national historic trail.

The Santa Fe Trail Association is a major partner with the National Park Service. The association is a national organization dedicated to preserving resources, and fostering public awareness and appreciation of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.

In 2003, the Santa Fe Trail Association and the National Park Service developed a Strategic Plan to guide their partnership work on the trail.

Did You Know?
Opened in 1821, the Santa Fe Trail became the lifeline for protection and communication between Missouri and Santa Fe. Military forts opened along the route to protect trail travel and trade, and freighting and merchant operations boomed.
