December 2008 Schedule Ranger Led Programs

  • Nature Center (NC) 5200 Glover Road, NW (off Military Rd.), 202-895-6070. Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.
  • Old Stone House (OSH) 3051 M Street, NW (in Georgetown), 202-426-6851. Hours: Daily, 12:00-5:00 PM.
  • Peirce Barn (PB) Tilden and Beach Drive, 202-282-0927. Hours: Saturday & Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM
  • Meridian Hill Park (MH) 16th St & Calvert St, NW 202-895-6070

Wednesday, December 3

• 4:00 PM @NC Young Planetarium This introduction to the night sky for the youngest of astronomers is a shortened version of our Night Sky Planetarium Program. Ages 4 and older.

Thursday, December 4

• 4:00PM @NC Woodland Trail Hike Join a park ranger for a walk through the woods and look for changes of the season. Boots are recommended. Ages 5 and older.

Friday, December 5

• 4:00 PM @NC Creature Feature Get acquainted with the Nature Center’s live animals and assist a park ranger in their feeding. All ages.

Saturday, December 6

• 10:00 AM @MH Meridian Hill Hike Learn the story of Meridian Hill Park while strolling along the scenic walkways of statues and fountains of this man-made oasis. Meet at the Joan of Arc statue above the cascading waterfall.  Ages 7 and older.
• 1:00 PM @NC Fall/Winter Night Sky
Visit the only planetarium in the National Park system and explore the wonders of the night sky. View the brightest stars, planets, and constellations of December and learn their stories. Ages 5 and older.
• 2:00 PM @NC Rapids Bridge Hike
Join a park ranger for this scenic 2-mile hike along Rock Creek to the Rapids Bridge and back. Boots are recommended. Ages 7 and older.
• 4:00 PM @NC Exploring the Universe
Join us for a series of planetarium programs exploring the universe. Topics for these programs include the sun, moon, stars, planets, and other space phenomena. Ages 7 and older.

Sunday, December 7

• 10:30 AM @OSH By The Dawn’s Early Light Join a park ranger on a walk through the Georgetown Waterfront Park to Francis Scott Key Park while discovering how the burning of the City of Washington by the British led to the writing of our nation's anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Ages 7 and older.
• 1:00 PM @NC Fall/Winter Night Sky

• 2:00 PM @PB Mill Update Discover what’s happening with Peirce Mill, Rock Creek’s last remaining mill. All ages.
• 4:00 PM @NC Exploring the Universe

Thursday, December 11

• 4:00 PM @NC The Forest in Winter Join a park ranger as we explore the Woodland Trail to learn what hidden treasures can be found in the forest. Ages 5 and older.

Friday, December 12

• 4:00 PM @NC Creature Feature See the program description for Friday, December 5th.

Saturday, December 13

• 10:00 AM @MH Embassy Hill Hike Explore the community around Meridian Hill and learn about the significant role Mary Foote Henderson played in creating “Embassy Hill”, an early 20th century attempt to attract world leaders and international embassies to the neighborhood. Meet at the Joan of Arc statue above the cascading waterfall. Ages 8 and older.

• 2:00 PM @ NC Milkhouse Ford Hike Join a park ranger for this 1.5-mile hike to the Milkhouse Ford and discover the diverse natural and cultural resources that surround this historic water crossing. Boots are recommended. Ages 7 years and older.
• 4:00 PM @NC Exploring the Universe

Sunday, December 14

• 10:00 AM @OSH Black Georgetown Hike Join a park ranger for a walking tour of historic Herring Hill, a Georgetown neighborhood that holds reminders of the vibrant African-American community that thrived here in the 19th century. Ages 8 and older.
• 1:00 PM @NC Fall/Winter Night Sky

• 2:00 PM @PB Theodore Roosevelt Hike Take a rigorous 2-mile hike up the Teddy Roosevelt Trail to Pulpit Rock and return to Peirce Mill via the Valley Trail. Participants will discover the story of the Jusserand Memorial, dedicated to one of Roosevelt’s closest friends. Ages 8 and older.

• 4:00 PM @NC Story Time: Squirrels Join us for a story on the secret lives of squirrels then accompany a park ranger to look for signs of squirrels around the nature center. Ages 3 to 6.

Saturday, December 20

• 10:00 AM @PB Riverwalk Experience a part of the park closed to traffic on the weekends. Enjoy the beauty of Rock Creek's rapids on this relatively flat, 3-mile walk to Military Road and back. Ages 7 and older.

Did You Know?
Coyote sightings have been reported in Washington, DC since May 2004. DO NOT FEED or attempt to feed them. Once a wild animal gets accustomed to being fed by humans there is much more likelihood that an individual will get bitten by an animal looking for food.
