The access road to the visitor center is located at 62-3601 Kawaihae Road, off of Route 270, one quarter mile (.4km) north of the Highway 19 intersection.

The park is on the northwestern shore of the island of Hawaii in the district of south Kohala.
Public Transportation
Taxis, tour buses, and rental cars. Rental cars may be rented at Hilo and Kona airports.

Did You Know?
Salt was one of the first trade goods between the natives and foreigners in the early 1800s. In the dry, leeward climate of the Kawaihae area, extensive salt pans produced this commodity used for food preservation. Hawaii's salt export trade reached a peak in about 1870.
