Mycoblitz and Fungus Fair at Point Reyes
Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)
Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria)

The Mycoblitz is part of a major multi-year effort to document the fungi at Point Reyes. This event occurs at least once every winter and the public is encouraged to participate. Participants search for mushrooms and fungi in Point Reyes for a few hours, and then reconvene to show what they found and to see what others discovered. All levels of mycological experience are welcome. Learn about the fungi, have fun, meet local amateur and professional mycologists, and contribute to science!

The Fungus Fair is an opportunity to learn about the fungi gathered by more than 100 volunteers who are helping to collect, identify and catalog the species of mushrooms at the Point Reyes National Seashore. Amateur mycologists will be on hand to talk about mushrooms, their role in the environment, and more!

For the 2007-2008 winter season, the Mycoblitz occurred on Saturday, December 29, 2007. Participants met at the Bear Valley Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. From there, participants spread out across Point Reyes to collect mushrooms and other fungi, and then returned to the Red Barn classroom at 1 p.m. for pre-sorting and a look at what was found.

Individuals wishing to participate in the Mycoblitz need to bring a mushroom collecting basket, a small garden trowel, a pocket knife, water, a whistle, a compass, and lunch. Dress for the weather and bring an extra layer of clothing for warmth. Wear sturdy hiking shoes. All trails in the park are closed to dogs — please leave yours at home for this foray. Wax bags will be provided.

Members of the Bay Area Mycological Society (BAMS), Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz (FFSC), Mycological Society of San Francisco (MSSF), and Sonoma County Mycological Association (SOMA), as well as mycologists from UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University are collaborating in this unique effort.

Did You Know?
Marine biologists have identified nearly a third of all known marine mammal species in the waters surrounding Point Reyes. Blue whales and humpback whales feed here during spring and summer months. Gray whales migrate past our shores twice a year on their round trip from Alaska to Baja.
