The Abbotts Lagoon Trail Enhancement Project was completed this month and provides enhanced access to the Abbotts Lagoon and North Beach areas of Point Reyes National Seashore. The completed improvements include trail reroutes and a 300 foot boardwalk to reduce trail impacts to wetland and endangered plant habitat. Steep sections were also rerouted to accommodate better visitor access and reduce potential for localized erosion.

Abbotts Lagoon Trail is a popular one mile trail from an existing trailhead to Abbotts Lagoon and North Beach. Visitors use this trail regularly for access to the beach and extensive dunes as well as bird watching in the lagoon and beach areas. Hard surface treatments allow for disabled access over a large section of the trail.

The project partner was the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, who provided a $50,000 cash match from an anonymous donor for this project. These funds were matched with National Park Service Centennial Funds.

The National Park Centennial is a 10-year program to reinvigorate America’s national parks and prepare them for a second century. The initiative includes a focus on increased funding for park operations plus a President’s Challenge; up to $100 million a year in federal funds to match $100 million in donations.
