Each fall, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers teacher workshops at Northern Michigan University through the Seaborg Math and Science Center, and at the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education's annual fall conference.

The Lakeshore also strives to offer week-long teacher workshops in June each year on a natural or cultural resource topic.

Most workshop sessions allow participants to earn Continuing Education Units of credit through Northern Michigan University.

 
Michigan Alliance of Environmental and Outdoor Education • October 10-12, 2008

This year's Michigan Alliance of Environmental and Outdoor Education annual conference scheduled for Friday-Sunday, October 10-12, at Camp Rotary, near Clare, Michigan. This year's conference theme is "Experiential Learning" and builds upon the "No Child Left Inside" movement. A diverse array of sessions is planned to inspire participants to get students outside year-round.

Early registration deadline is September 26 to receive the registration package price of $50 for members, $100 for non-members, and $30 for university students. This includes two nights/five meals from dinner Friday through Sunday breakfast. (Alternate registration packages are also available.) There is an additional $25 fee for the full-day of pre-conference activities on Friday, October 10, including the ropes course, zip line, and tower supervision. Registration fees and forms are online.

Environmental Education Workshop for Teachers and Non-formal Educators • May 2-3, 2008 • Teaching with the Outdoors

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will co-sponsor this outdoor learning and field science workshop at the Clear Lake Education Center near Shingleton, Michigan. Sessions include the North American Association for Environmental Education Guidelines for Excellence in developing environmental education lessons and programs, LEAF forestry education program, GEMS schoolyard ecology, global climate change, and field trips to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Seney National Wildlife Refuge.

The Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education is a partnership of the Copper Country and Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School Districts and Michigan Technological University. The Center offers a wide variety of programs focused on enhancing the teaching and learning of science and mathematics.

Did You Know?
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is the only National Park Service area with an inland buffer zone within its boundary. It is owned by the State of Michigan, corporations, and private citizens. The zone was created to permit sustained yield timber harvest and protect the watershed.
