On January 11, 2000, an area of 1,050,963 acres was set aside by President Clinton to protect the array of scientific and historic objects, and the remote, scenic qualities of the region. The National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management share responsibility for the management of this land - consistent with applicable laws.
