Through hands on activities, living history programs, and more, you can experience farm life and how its changed overtime. Explore how the park evolved from a plantation home during the War of 1812, to a hospital farm, to the park you can visit today.

Exploring the Farm
Take a step back into time when life seemed more simple. Explore Oxon Hill Farm, the main feature of Oxon Cove Park, and its outbuildings, join in on the typical farm day activities, learn about the dairy cow and other farm animals, or take a wagon ride through the natural areas of the park. For Educators
Oxon Cove Park offers a wide variety of education programs for a wide variety of age groups. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance of your field trip.

The Underground Railroad
Oxon Cove Park is part of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
According to runaway advertisements in a local newspaper, enslaved worker, Jacob Shaw, fled the Berry Plantation. Today, the Berry plantation comprises the southern most part of Oxon Cove Park.

Mount Welby
Mount Welby is the oldest structure in Oxon Cove Park. This was the 19th century home of the Debutts family. Seventeen enslaved people lived and worked here during this time. There are exhibits on the first floor that examine what life was like for those who lived on the Mount Welby plantation. Explore further, and see how this building became a caretaker home and patient dormatory, from 1891-1950, when it was a hospital farm known as Godding Croft.

Climate
Oxon Hill, Maryland has a temperate climate, with four distinct seasons. Summer tends to be very hot and humid with daily high temperatures averaging in the high 80s° to low 90s°F(30° to 33°C). The combination of heat and humidity results in frequent thunderstorms. Winter can bring cold temperatures, frozen precipitation and, on occasions, major snowstorms. Average highs tend to be in the 40s°F (4 to 8°C) and lows in the 20s°F (-6 to -2°C). Spring and fall are mild with high temperatures averaging in the high 60s°F (20°C).

Did You Know?
In 1891, Saint Elizabeths Hospital, acquired the Oxon Cove Park Property, to establish a farm where patients, removed from the confines of a hospital setting, could benefit from fresh air and outdoor work at this new "farm colony." This hospital farm was called Godding Croft.
