Flapjack Lakes to Glady Divide

Trail is snow-free with the exception of the final 150 yards to the divide.

Closed to stock. Use Animal-Resistant Food Canisters to store food if you are camping above Flapjack Lakes; hanging food properly is very difficult in this area.

Trail is snow-free; all campsites and lake are melted-out. One down tree; many down branches and other debris between 3600' and 3900' makes the trail hard to follow.

No good trees for food-hanging; Bear Canisters required when food cannot be hung at least 12 feet high and 10 feet out from the nearest tree trunk.

Trail is snow-free to Black and White Lakes; no report beyond. Black and White Lakes and all its campsites are melted-out.

Steep, rocky, difficult trail from Black and White Lakes to Smith Lake. Not recommended for stock.

90 down trees between N. Fork Skokomish and McGravey Lakes.

In summer, the trail is difficult to follow in places between McGravey Lakes and Belview Camp. Routefinding skills recommended.

Putvin Primitive Trail (Lake of the Angels)

Park boundary to & including Lake of the Angels

0.6 miles
1130 ft. to 4850 ft.

Patchy snow begins at 4300'; continuous at Pond of the False Prophet bench (~ 4500'). 3 ft. of snow remains at the completely frozen-over Lake of the Angels.

Be prepared for snow in the high country. Trails may be difficult to follow when snow-covered.

Last 0.6 mile of the trail is inside Olympic NP (no hunting!). 3.6 miles from the trailhead to Lake of the Angels.

Very steep trail. Trail is difficult to follow in a few places. Closed to stock.

Duckabush River Trail

Park boundary to Jct. Home Sweet Home & O'Neil Pass Trails

11.0 miles

440 ft. to 4950 ft.

Trail is snow-free to Marmot Lake; patchy 3-4 ft. of snow around lake. Clear of down trees to 2000' (Crazy Creek area) with the exception of a large cedar snag blocking the trail to stock between Little Hump and Big Hump on the USFS section of trail. Many down trees above 2000'; especially above Upper Duckabush Camp, making trail impassable to stock. No recent report above Marmot Lake.

Slide at 7.5 mile mark has been repaired; trail is now passable to stock at that point.

Upper Duckabush ford was running at normal CFS with a hiker reporting no problems crossing on a fallen tree on 5/28.

A hiker reports a bear exhibiting no fear of hikers in meadow area ~ 0.6 mi. below Upper Duckabush Camp. Ensure proper food storage!

Be prepared for snow in the high country. Trails may be difficult to follow when snow-covered.

River crossings can be hazardous during spring runoff and after heavy rain.

Lingering patchy snow remains at the pass. 3-4 ft. of snow remained at Anderson Moraine/Lake and lake was completely frozen-over on 5/27 (no recent report).

Cameron Pass Trail JCT GRAND PASS TRAIL TO CAMERON PASS 3.6 miles
4150 ft. to 6450 ft.

Deer Park Road and Obstruction Point Road are now open.

Patchy snow commences at 4700'; 50% snow-cover remaining in Upper Cameron Basin, with most campsites melted-out. North face of Cameron Pass remains 75% snow-covered.

Trail is very brushy from junction to 5000'. 

Be prepared for snow in the high country. Trails may be difficult to follow when snow-covered.

Bear canisters are required for Upper Cameron Basin.

The Obstruction Peak headwall remains snow-covered and potentially dangerous, especially during morning hours. Ice axe with self-arrest skills still recommended. Remainder of trail snow-free.

The Grand Creek log bridge is twisted and off it's footing, and reported unsafe for crossing; use caution fording creek! 

In summer, the trail is very brushy in the big meadow area in Badger Valley and may be difficult to follow.

Overnight hikers must register at the Wilderness Information Center in Port Angeles.

Overnight hikers must register at Wilderness Information Center in Port Angeles.

Not recommended for stock. Animal-Resistant Food Canisters (ARFC) are recommended for camping at Heather Park.

2nd footlog from the trailhead is very springy and somewhat unstable-- use caution!

Above 3700' the trail is a little hard to follow in places, and when snow melts, very brushy and obscure in open areas.

The trail is snow-free to the top of the ridge; only a few large patches remain to Hurricane Hill junction. 25+ down trees.

Trail is somewhat difficult to follow in meadow switchbacks.

A section of trail tread is washed-out near the top of the ridge. Closed to stock.

Trail is snow-free. Clear of down trees to Hayes River, 5 down trees to Chicago Camp, and 3 additional to Low Divide.

There is a bear frequenting the Elkhorn area; store food properly!

The Elwha River must be forded at 24-mile and Chicago Camp (bridge out). Fords are currently running 2 ft. deep.

Both river crossings can be hazardous in spring and/or after heavy precipitation.

The North Fork Quinault River Trail has numerous very hazardous washouts between Low Divide and Wild Rose Creek, therefore hiking this trail is not recommended. 

The NF Quinault Trail will most likely be impassable to stock in 2009.

Humes Ranch Loop GEYSER VALLEY, KRAUSE BOTTOM, RICA CANYON AND HUMES RANCH LOOP  4.3 miles
1198 ft. to 900 ft/

Clear of down trees and snow.

Bear wires are located near the meadow below Humes Cabin. The trail between Humes Ranch and the Dodger Bridge is not recommended for stock.

Snow begins at trail-end. Clear of down trees.

Hayden Pass Trail JCT ELWHA RIVER TRAIL TO HAYDEN PASS 8.4 miles
1800 ft. to 5847 ft.

Trail is snow-free; 90 down trees.

At 0.5 mi. below the pass (at ~ 5600'), a slide removed 50' of trail, creating a gully that is difficult to get through.

Long Ridge Trail JCT HUMES RANCH LOOP TRAIL (MILE 1.0) TO DODGER POINT 10.5 miles
900 ft. to 5753 ft.

Continuous snow commences 0.5 mile below Dodger Point. Ponds remain frozen-over and covered with snow; campsites also remain snow-covered. Clear of down trees to 1 mile above the Dodger Point suspension bridge; 5 down trees above.

Be prepared for snow in the high country. Trails may be difficult to follow when snow-covered.

The trail between Humes Ranch and the Dodger Point suspension bridge has been re-routed.  

Last reliable water source is a spring at 4600'; little or no water at Dodger Pt. (except somewhat brackish ponds) once snow melts.

Dodger Point Primitive Trail JCT LONG RIDGE TRAIL TO JCT ELWHA RIVER TRAIL VIA SEMPLE PLATEAU 5.2 miles
5800 ft. to 1451 ft.

No recent report.

The last reliable water source is 1 mile below Dodger Point.

Elwha River crossing at Remann's Cabin is deep and swift. Crossing is always very difficult or impossible to ford during high water.

Happy Hollow Trail JCT ELWHA RIVER TRAIL (AT CHICAGO CAMP) TO HAPPY HOLLOW 0.7 miles

Below Happy Hollow there are two washout sections of ~ 50' across and a large blowdown near them where the river abuts the trail.

Happy Lake Ridge Trail TRAILHEAD ON OLYMPIC HOT SPRINGS ROAD VIA HAPPY LAKE RIDGE TO JCT BOULDER LAKE TRAIL 9.5 miles
1300 ft. to 5409 ft.

Continuous snow commences at ~ 4650'. ~ 3 ft. of snow remaining for the final 0.75 mile below the Happy Lake junction; route finding required. All campsites at Happy Lake remain snow-covered. No report beyond to Boulder Lake; expect all sections of trail on the north side of Happy Lake Ridge to be snow-covered. 42 down trees to Happy Lake junction, expect many down beyond.

Bear Canisters recommended at Happy Lake. Happy Lake and Boulder Lake are the only water sources on this trail.

Olympic Hot Springs Trail TRAILHEAD TO & INCLUDING OLYMPIC HOT SPRINGS 2.5 miles

Snow-free and clear of down trees.

Store food properly. The trail is not passable to stock.

All food, garbage and scented items must be stored in park-approved bear canisters in the Sol Duc/High Divide Loop/Mink Lake area.

This is a primitive trail; topographic map and compass skills will be needed to find the trail. There is NO WATER along this trail! 

Fording the Bogachiel River can be hazardous in spring and/or after heavy precipitation. The upper crossing trail is a bit hard to find from the gravel bar but is in pretty good shape once you find it. Not recommended for stock.

HOH RIVER TRAIL TRAILHEAD TO GLACIER MEADOWS 17.5 miles
600 ft. to 5000 ft.

A female Mtn Lion with kit has been sighted in the 5-mile Island camping area numerous times recently. It was not scared away easily. Camping not recommended here.

Only patchy snow remaining at Glacier Meadows; most campsites are melted-out. Clear of down trees to Martin Creek where the footlog is out, requiring a ford. The avalanche chute (about a 1/4 mile before Glacier Meadows campsite) is EXTREMELY hazardous right now with VERY loose scree. A rope ladder has been constructed to assist hikers through this chute.

Campsite at mile 5.4 was washed away this past winter by the Hoh River.

Trail closed to horses, mules and burros beyond Martin Creek stock camp. 

No campfires permitted at Elk Lake or above.

The final avalanche chute (about a 1/4 mile before Glacier Meadows campsite) is EXTREMELY hazardous right now. VERY loose scree; a very dangerous slide area.

North Fork Quinault River Trail TRAILHEAD TO LAKE MARGARET 16.5 miles
600 ft. to 3600 ft.

Trail is snow-free; all campsites are melted-out. Clear of down trees to the nine-mile point; many down above. Severe washout at creek at 9-mile mark involves traversing unstable terrain. Although much of the Twelve Mile area has been buried in gravel, there are campsites available. Trail through the Twelve Mile area completely washed away; follow the flagging along the the creek just prior to the washout and continue along the river until the trail resumes. Major washout at first creek above Sixteen Mile with several down trees; another above also with several down trees and unstable terrain. Only two down trees between Glacier Creek and Low Divide.

Wild Rose Creek ford is currently 1 ft. deep.

Sixteen Mile ford was 2 ft. deep on 6/23/09.

As noted above, there are numerous hazardous washouts that require technical skill to cross safely. Travel above Stalding Creek is not recommended.

The trail is stock passable to Stalding Creek, stock ford there has been completed. The remainder of the trail remains under repair.

12-mile bear wire is down and the shelter is buried in gravel. 

Most campsites at Halfway House and Elip Creek have washed away.

The Stalding Creek Bridge has been washed away. The creek can be difficult to ford. Stock ford area has been completed and is now safe to cross.

Sixteen Mile crossing can be hazardous or impossible to cross in spring and/or after heavy precipitation.

Overnight hikers must register at South Shore Lake Quinault Ranger Station.

East Fork Quinault River Trail TRAILHEAD TO ANDERSON PASS 18.2 miles
646 ft. to 4465 ft.

Patchy snow begins 0.5 mile below pass; 2 ft. of lingering snow for ~ 200 linear ft. at the pass. 20 down trees.

Avalanche debris has covered a 150' section of trail ~ 1 mile above Enchanted Valley Chalet; trail is currently passable to hikers but not passable to stock until a reroute is cut.

The Graves Creek Road is closed at Howe Creek, 4.5 miles from the Graves Creek Campground due to major damage from winter storms. 

Trail above White Creek is not stock-passable.

This area consistently has a high population of bears; please help keep them wild by properly securing all food, garbage and scented items. Animal-Resistant Food Canisters are recommended.

Overnight hikers must register at South Shore Lake Quinault Ranger Station.

Wynoochee Pass Trail PARK BOUNDARY TO JCT SUNDOWN LAKE & GRAVES CREEK TRAILS 3.6 miles
2700 ft. to 3600 ft.

The east side of the FS 2270 loop road, which has been the only trailhead access the last two years, is washed out and closed at the Wynoochee River Bridge (~ 7 miles from trailhead). It is, however, foot and bicycle passable. The longer, higher-elevation, rockslide-prone west side road has been repaired, call 360-956-2400 for open/closed status.

The Camp Grisdale Road Project will result in closures of Forest Service Road 22 (FS-22) through October/November of 2009.

Please anticipate the following road closures through all phases of construction:

 

Partial closure - from now until July 8, and then again after August 15, 2009: The Camp Grisdale Road (FS-22) will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles from 6:00 AM Tuesday morning until 6:00 PM Thursday evening. The road will be open Friday through Monday.

 

Full closurefrom July 8, 2009 through August 15, 2009, the Camp Grisdale Road (FS-22) will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles  every day, including weekends. The best alternate route to the Wynoochee area during this time will be on the Donkey Creek Road (FS Road 22) north of Hoquiam.

The Queets River ford just above Sams River (775 CFS @ 1200 14 August 2008) was measured at waist-deep on average-size (~ 5'9") person.

Fording the Queets River can be dangerous. For river discharge levels, visit Queets Stream Flow. The river is generally fordable when the flow (measured at highway 101) is below 1,000 CFS.  The crossing can still be waist deep or deeper even at this level.

The flow can go from fordable levels to unfordable levels (10,000-70,000 CFS or more) overnight or in a few hours of heavy rain. Know the weather forecast. Don't get caught upriver during a rain storm unless you have planned in advance to stay awhile.

Cape Alava Trail TRAILHEAD (OZETTE) TO CAPE ALAVA 3.3 miles

Do not gather firewood from the forest at Cape Alava; burn driftwood only! There is little or no driftwood at Cape Alava. Do not rely on fire to cook food.

North Coast Beach Route SAND POINT VIA BEACH TO QUILLAYUTE RESERVATION BOUNDARY 17.1 miles

The section of beach trail from Yellow Banks to Norwegian Memorial has no water sources and is very rocky, slippery and has stretches of tedious loose gravel. The trail on the north side of Coastie Head has been undercut and eroded on the lower end. The short headland trail on the south side of Saddle Rock is also slightly damaged but passable. Build campfires 10 feet or farther away from large drift logs.

Pets are only permitted on beach from Quillayute Reservation boundary (Rialto Beach) north to Ellen Creek (0.8 miles). Pets must be on 6-foot leash or less.

A new toilet (privy) has been installed at Hole-in-the-Wall just opposite the seastacks.

South Coast Beach Route THIRD BEACH TO OIL CITY TRAIL

One tree down on Taylor Point headland trail. 4 medium down trees on Scotts Bluff headland trail. Many down trees on Falls/Goodman Creek headland trail. A hiker reports that the Goodman Creek ford is currently running 3 ft. deep; Falls Creek is easily crossed on fallen logs, but use caution. Overland  trail between Mosquito Creek and Jefferson Cove (Hoh Head headland trail) has been cleared of down trees.

Mosquito Creek should be forded at or near low tide; Goodman Creek can be difficult or impossible to ford during fall, winter and spring or during periods of heavy rain.

The Extreme Low Tide route at Hoh Head is closed due to washout; please use the overland trail between Mosquito Creek and Jefferson Cove instead.

Overland trail between Mosquito Creek and Jefferson Cove is extremely brushy and muddy. Hikers are advised to use caution when ascending and descending headland trails and rope ladders, as they are very steep and slippery when wet.

The headland between Jefferson Cove and the mouth of the Hoh River requires a 2ft tide or lower to round. Always carry a tide table!

Beach access to/from the Oil City trailhead from the Hoh River mouth is cutoff at high tide.
