Most of the land along the Niobrara River (including the streambed, banks and islands) is privately owned. Please respect private landowner rights and utilize public restrooms and public river access points when possible. Carry out all trash and properly dispose of it.
The National Park Service manages the scenic river primarily through partnerships and agreements with various agencies and organizations, and with the cooperation of private landowners. A ranger station is located in the town of Valentine at 146 South Hall Street.
Most visitors come to the Niobrara River valley to float the river by tube, canoe or kayak during the summer months. Weekends are the busiest times and on a busy Saturday it is possible to encounter from 1,000 to 2,000 people floating the river. Other visitors come to drive the valley's scenic roads, hike, horseback ride, picnic, hunt or fish.
Several river outfitters charge a fee to either launch or take out a vessel along the river. Most river outfitters also operate private campgrounds. Some outfitters have cabins for rent which vary from primitive to modern in construction and amenities. Others offer horseback riding, catered meals, fishing, hunting and guided river trips.
