Interpretive Specialist Moving On - Margaret Styles is leaving the Anza Trail staff. She will be working in Yosemite National Park as the first Interpretation Coach for park partner public programs this summer. In the fall, she will take an extended leave from the NPS to enhance her skills in coaching and training. Her last day in the office will be May 21. Thank you for your hard work!

Mary Dahl receives award from Richard Williams
Volunteer Award to Mary Dahl - The Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona and the NPS awarded Mary Dahl in recognition of her outstanding volunteer service to the Anza Trail. Richard Williams expressed the organizations thanks for all the work and expertise Mary has brought to the table. Thank you, Mary!

Clearing Away the Weeds - Across the river from Griffith Park in Los Angeles, there is a red and white Anza Trail mural. It was painted by youth many years ago through the North East Trees organization. In early April, Dennis Sundman cut the weeds and picked up the trash on his own initiative. Last summer, he was one of our first seasonal Teacher-Ranger-Teacher staff. These photos illustrate what a difference one person can make.

Bottle dam on the Santa Cruz River

Clean Up the River - Volunteers from Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona and the Rio Rico Interact Club tackled a bottle dam along the Santa Cruz River in Arizona. Bottle dams are created when garbage in the river gets caught on an object (like a fallen tree trunk) and starts backing up to create a dam.

Did You Know?
Captain Juan Bautista de Anza was one of the first Spaniards to visit the Casa Grande ruins in modern day Arizona in 1775. He had his priest, Father Pedro Font, measure its dimensions with a lance, and then use an astronomical quadrant to fix its astronomical position.
