The Kids in Parks program series at Homestead National Monument of America is back for its second season of summer fun! Join Park Rangers on Saturdays, July 4 through August 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the monument’s Education Center for fun, educational, outdoor programs. Each free program helps children and their families explore and experience nature first hand.
"The diverse plant and wildlife at Homestead National Monument of America lends itself to be an excellent place for families and friends to learn about nature together." said Superintendent Mark Engler. Each week a new focus will be presented including walks and activities great for all ages. The Kids in Parks program is part of a national effort to spark children’s imagination and appreciation for the great outdoors.
Kids In Parks Summer Schedule
July 4th – Creek Critters: Learn about the amazing world of insects that live beneath the water’s surface and what makes them so very important. How many critters can you find?
July 11th – Birdie Basics: Grab some binoculars and let’s go birding! Learn how to identify birds and play Birdie Bingo. The monument has binoculars to share if needed.
July 18th – Elders of the Forest: Can you tell how old a tree is by not counting its rings? Learn this and much more about Homestead’s monumental trees.
July 25th – The Great Bug Hunt: Is it a true bug? Is it an insect? How can one tell? Become a bug detective with this great hands-on program about the smaller residents in nature’s community.
August 1st – Prairie Plant Prowl: Let’s prowl the prairie and learn how to identify its unique and vibrant plant life. Build a terrarium and take a prairie plant home!
August 8th – Amazing Animal Adaptations: Find out how animals' unique shapes, sizes and features help them to survive. Imagine what kind of animal you would like to be and put it to test in playing Adaptation Tag!
All programs are free of charge. No registration is required. Participants are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes and be prepared with sun block and bug spray. Program length is subject to change due to heat or other inclement weather.
