Come Join Us This Summer: Horseshoe Bend Offers 2009 Summer Children's Programs

 

Learning is always just around the Bend at Alabama’s oldest national park – HorseshoeBendNationalMilitaryPark. Children ages 6 through 12 can have some fun, spend time outdoors, and keep their mind’s fresh by attending the a Kid’s Culture Camp this summer. All camps begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. There is no charge to attend the camp but, because group size is limited, reservations must be made in advance. The camps are:

 

Creek Indian Culture Camp

Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11

Activities include playing stickball, making pottery and baskets, and a ranger-led hike.

 

A Day in the Life of a Soldier History Camp

Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25

Learn about the Battle of Horseshoe Bend from the perspective of a soldier.

 

The Nature of Horseshoe Bend Camp

Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9

Discover the role the nature of Horseshoe Bend played in the history of its people through games and walks.

 

Reservations are taken starting Monday, May 11 and will be accepted up to ten days prior to the start of a camp. Parents or guardians should make reservations by calling (256) 234-7111 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Ask for Summer Camp Reservations. Park Guide Heather Tassin is leading the camps and managing the reservations for the camps. Each camp is offered twice on consecutive days.

 

Parents who need additional support can drop off their children as early as 8:30 a.m. and pick them up no later than 4:30 p.m. For more information, contact Park Guide Heather Tassin at (256) 234-7111. Attendance is limited to 25 children per day. The attendees will participate in a range of activities both indoors and outdoors and receive a Horseshoe Bend patch and a take home craft project.

 

Parents are expected bring the children to the park and pick them up as scheduled and to provide a sack lunch for their child or children. Children should be dressed comfortably for the weather and have sunscreen and a hat for outdoor activities. The park will provide snacks and water for breaks.

Did You Know?
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park is one of the four dedicated ‘War of 1812’ parks in the NPS system. The others are Fort McHenry National Monument in Baltimore, Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial in Ohio, and Chalmette National Battlefield in New Orleans.
