PEOPLE AND LAND OF KAHUKU
Ranger-led Hike

 

When: Sunday, March 15, 2009

Where: Meet at Kahuku's gate (located between the 70 and 71 mile markers on Hwy 11, approximately 42 miles south of Kilauea Visitor Center)

Time: 9:30 a.m to 12:30 a.m
Note: Gate is only open from 9:00 a.m to 9:30 a.m on this one day only. 4WD is not needed.

What: This is a moderately difficult ranger-led 2 1/2 mile, 3 hour hike through pasture, quarry, airstrip, and the extraordinary beauty of 1868 lava fields.

  • Learn how people lived on the vast Kahuku lands, from the earliest Hawaiians through today.
  • Hear about Kahuku's history of violent earthquakes and eruptions and the people who survived them.
  • Walk through an emerging native forest to explore 1868 volcanic vents and flows.
  • Learn Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park's plans to restore native ecosystems and protect cultural sites.

What to Wear: Boots, long pants, and protection from weather (jacket/rain jacket)

What to Bring: Water (there is NO water available in that area), backpack, snacks, camera, trekking poles (optional)

The young fronds of the `ama`u fern (Saleria cyatheodides) often emerge red to block harmful rays from the sun. They gradually turn green with age.
