Day Hike - Waldron Ledge (Earthquake Trail)

Earthquake (Waldron Ledge) Trail 

Walk a section of the old Crater Rim Drive that was damaged in 1983 by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake.

Of Interest: Plants, birds, insects, earthcracks, views of Kilauea Caldera and Mauna Loa.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Distance and hiking time: 1 mile roundtrip, 45 minutes
  • Trail begins to the left of the Volcano House hotel when facing the caldera.
  • Wheelchair and stroller accessible - trail is over a paved road surface.

Note: This trail is often offered as a ranger-led walk. Check the daily schedule in the visitor center for times.

Did You Know?
Kilauea Volcano has erupted lava almost continuously from its east rift zone since 1983. These lava flows have added over 568 acres (230 hectares) of new land to the southern shore of Kilauea and covered 8.7 miles (14 km) of highway with lava as deep as 115 feet (35 m).
