The visitor center at Fort Necessity National Battlefield will be closed Monday, January 19 and Monday, February 16 in observance of the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Washington's Birthday federal holidays.

Original 1771 Bill of Sale of Washington's Fort Necessity Unveiled
The National Park Service has acquired the original “Bill of Sale,” documenting George Washington’s purchase of the Great Meadows in 1771, the site of the Battle of Fort Necessity.  The document was unveiled at a reception at the Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center.

Warriors Weekend at Fort Necessity National Battlefield
The National Park Service will host an “Indian War Party” encampment at Fort Necessity National Battlefield on Saturday, August 9, and Sunday, August 10.  Re-enactment groups will represent a Lenape war party allied with the French and a Cherokee war party allied with the British.

American Indian Traditional Skills Demonstration Weekend
Traditional American Indian Skills will be demonstrated on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 at Fort Necessity National Battlefield from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m.  The Connellsville Area Historical Society will host the program with the support of a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities’ We the People initiative on American history.

Memorial Salutes this Weekend at Fort Necessity
Rolling Thunder Chapter 5 Pennsylvania will perform a "missing man" ceremonial ritual July 3 to honor the fallen, missing in action, and prisoners of war from the battle.  The Braddock campaign of 1755 will also be remembered at Fort Necessity this weekend through the story of one wagoner's trials and travails.

Historic detachments of French Marines and Colonial British troops will set up camp in the Great Meadows at Fort Necessity National Battlefield on this weekend, May 31 and June 1.

The National Park Service is offering two volunteer training workshops at Fort Necessity National Battlefield.  These one day workshops will prepare park volunteers to assist park staff in the presentation of programs about Native American life ways focused on tribes which were involved in the French and Indian War.

The National Park Service and National Road Heritage Corridor today announced an essay contest for college students.  The staff of Fort Necessity National Battlefield will administer the “2008 French and Indian War Essay Contest” that will provide $9,000 in scholarships.

The new interpretive playground at Fort Necessity will be dedicated on May 16 in a kid friendly ceremony.    Children, ages four to ten are invited to come help cut the ribbon and celebrate!

The National Park Service is seeking public comments on the proposed annual fee increase for January 1, 2008. The pass covers entrance to Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site and Fort Necessity National Battlefield.

French Encampment and Market Fair at Fort Necessity
The National Park Service , in partnership with the National Road Heritage Corridor, will host a market fair for historic crafts at Fort Necessity National Battlefield during the Columbus day Weekend.  The event, held Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8 will showcase the newly completed restoration of the inside of the Mount Washington Tavern and will also include an encampment of eighteenth century French soldiers

Indian War Party to Camp at Fort Necessity National Battlefield
The National Park Service will host an Indian War Party at Fort Necessity National Battlefield Encampment on Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13.  The camp will be open to visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. This will be the first time a war party encampment has been held at Fort Necessity National Battlefield.

Did You Know?
After the battle at Fort Necessity, hostage Captain Stobo was held by the French at Fort Duquesne. Given some freedom, he drew a map of the fort and had an Indian smuggle it to the British. The map was captured by the French and Stobo tried for treason. He was found guilty but managed to escape.
