Dinosaur National Monument
Outdoor Activities

Hiking and river rafting are two of the most popular activities in Dinosaur National Monument – but are by no means all that Dinosaur has to offer. Bicycling is available on maintained dirt roads. There are many good places to cast your fishing rod. Backcountry camping is a great way to feel like you are the only person in the monument. Nighttime reveals some of the darkest skies in America – perfect for stargazing. Mount up and go horseback riding. Or just take a leisurely trip on one of two scenic drives.

Winter snow and cold can limit access to many parts of the monument. Other winter recreation opportunities, however, are available because of the snow. Snowmobiling is permitted on Harpers Corner Drive between the Plug Hat Parking Area and the Echo Park Road turnoff. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also permitted.

Contact either of the visitor center for a schedule of ranger-led programs during the summer.

Photo of paleontologist Earl Douglass.

Did You Know?
Paleontologist Earl Douglass first came to Utah looking for mammal fossils. He returned in 1909 and discovered an immense deposit of dinosaur bones, now protected at Dinosaur National Monument. Although made famous by dinosaurs, Douglass died preferring his beloved mammal fossils over dinosaurs.
