Environmental factors such as air quality, pests, disease, water quality and weather greatly affect the way in which the park is managed. All of these factors must be considered to ensure not only a safe visit to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, but an enjoyable one as well.

Most of the formations—or speleothems—found inside Carlsbad Cavern today were active and growing during the last ice age when instead of having a desert above the cave, there were pine forests.
