Fair is Fair

The Fair is Fair DVD and teacher's guide (PDF, 1.87MB) is produced in cooperation by the National Park Service and the Brown Foundation to provide teachers of students in grades K-3 resources for teaching concepts of justice, democracy and social awareness. The DVD provides information about the National Park Service and specifically about Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka, Kansas as well as introduces learners to the concepts of fairness in public education. The teacher's guide provides lesson plans, additional resources and suggested learning activities to complement the information introduced in the video.

Rather than try to explain abstract concepts of historical events surrounding the Brown v. Board of Education U.S. Supreme Court case, the Fair is Fair packet is intended to present skills and processes in alignment with the Kansas state benchmarks for Social Studies through music, games, physical activities and discussion. Appropriate skill levels and benchmarks will be detailed for each grade level.

Grades 7-8
EDUCATION AND JUSTICE: A Struggle for Equality in the Public Schools

The National Park Service and the Advanced Learning Technologies project at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning have developed a Web Quest titled EDUCATION AND JUSTICE: A Struggle for Equality in the Public Schools. This Web Quest project is an on-site, inquiry-based activity for 7th and 8th graders. School groups of 24-30 students will breakup into teams of three to complete a designated task from a CD-ROM provided by the National Park Service. By using information found on the Internet, the park resource center and in the museum galleries, the student teams will produce a PowerPoint presentation to report their findings to the whole class. The entire activity and museum tour will take approximately 3-4 hours to complete.

Grades 8-12
Brown

This curriculum kit has recently been revised and is now available for distribution.

The Brown Foundation and the National Park Service worked closely to produce this curriculum to provide teachers the resources needed to teach concepts of fairness and social democracy.The Brown curriculum kit includes a Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site handbook; a DVD with two short videos titled Reading, Writing and Resistance and Dialog; and a CD-ROM entitled Brown v. Board of Education: Struggle for Equality with a teacher’s guide. The CD-ROM uses narration, historical photos, and poses thought-provoking questions. It is intended to aid in understanding the Brown decision in both a historical and contemporary context.
