Things To Know Before You Come
 

Big Hole National Battlefield is located 6,300 feet above sea level. Visitors may need to slow their pace when walking. Drinking plenty of fluids is encouraged as summers and winters in the Big Hole Valley can be dry. Weather conditions can vary greatly at any time of year. Layered clothing is highly recommended. 

 

The nearest facilities are in Wisdom, Montana 10 miles east of the battlefield. Wisdom features a gas station, market, and several restaurants. 

 

Cell phone coverage is not typically available in the Big Hole Valley.

Colonel Sturgis had four hundred men at his disposal during the Canyon Creek Battle, yet never committed more than half of them during the battle itself. Some thought his extreme caution was the result of his son being killed with Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn just the preceding year.
