Environmental Assessment on Dominion Virginia's Proposed Powerline

An Environmental Assessment has been prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act to address impacts of Dominion Virginia Power's proposed power line. The proposed line would cross the Appalachian National Scenic Trail close to Linden, Virginia. The public is encouraged to comment on the Environmental Assessment within the next 30 days. Comments must be received no later than October 28, 2009. Please use the electronic comment form for submitting comments. National Public Lands Day - September 26, 2009

Join staff and volunteers from the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park on a collaborative clean-up effort on national park lands and trails in the Harpers Ferry area.  Volunteers are asked to meet rangers at the Keyes Gap AT parking area off of WV-9 where they will be shuttled to the clean-up site.  Project time will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring work gloves.  Tools will be provided.  Water will be provided.  Call 304.535.5017 for more information.

The National Parks:  America's Best Idea

The National Parks: America's Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. This 12-hour series will air on public television stations across the country beginning September 27th. It features the stories of people - rich and poor, famous and the unknown – all who lived their lives to save the natural, cultural, historic and wild places that became our National Parks.

Did you know?  Jefferson County, West Virginia; Washington County, Maryland; and Loudoun County, Virginia are all home to a half-dozen units of the National Park Service – all in your backyard – have you visited them lately?

Did You Know?
The A.T. is marked with two inch by six inch vertical white paint blazes. A double blaze, one above the other, is placed before turns, junctions, or other areas that require hikers to be alert. There are approximately 165,000 blazes along the Appalachian Trail.
